Goni enters East Sea, becoming 10th typhoon to hit Vietnam

VOV.VN - Storm Goni, the tenth typhoon of the year, entered the East Sea on the morning of November 2 after sweeping down the Philippines, according to the National Centre of Hydro-meteorological and Forecasting (NCHF).

At around 4 a.m on November 2, the typhoon was located about 820 km southeast of the Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago, with the strongest wind power of between 75-90kph gusting up to 11 category near its eye.

Over the next 24 to 48 hours, the typhoon will move mainly in the west direction at  at speed of 15-20km per hour, about 310km from Quang Nam, about 240km from Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh, about 260km from Phu Yen. The strongest wind force close to its centre of between 75-90kph, packing winds of 12 category.

Over the next 48 to 72 hours, it is anticipated to travel west at a speed of about 10kph, move inland from Da Nang to Phu Yen and then weaken into a tropical depression, which will move in the southwest direction at the same speed.

As of November 2, the sea areas from Binh Thuan to Ca Mau, Ca Mau to Kien Giang, the Gulf of Thailand and southern East Sea, including the waters of Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago will be hit by scattered showers, thunderstorms and possible whirlwinds.

Meanwhile, post-storm recovery efforts continue to get underway in central Vietnam as Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc had a meeting with local authorities of Quang Nam, Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh provinces, and Da Nang city on November 1 in an effort to overcome consequences caused by Molave typhoon and carry out search and rescue operations.

Currently, competent forces are urgently searching for missing people and focusing on the rescue work at landslide-hit places, with priority given to providing enough food for locals and restoring essential facilities such as electricity and irrigation works, schools and houses.

PM Phuc underlined the need urgently deal with the consequences of floods and typhoon Molave by all means as there is a high risk of diseases and environmental problems.

Regarding specific measures, the Government chief stressed the urgent need to ensure travel on arterial traffic routes, particularly those for distributing relief aid, while taking all necessary measures to search for and rescue people still missing due to multiple floods and landslides, and provide timely treatment for injured people.

He also called for extra efforts and preparedness to respond to Goni storm which is forecast to make landfall in Vietnam in a couple of days.
