Forum links Vietnamese gas companies to global energy supply chain

VOV.VN - A forum on linking Vietnamese gas companies with the global energy supply chain was jointly held in Hanoi on January 14, by Dai Doan Ket (Great Solidarity) Newspaper and its partners.

The event is designed to seek solution to boost the development of the domestic LNG market and support Vietnamese gas firms in deeper participation in regional and international markets.

It provided a venue for policymakers, experts, businesses and the broader community to discuss and exchange information, and to propose solutions to promote the development of Vietnam’s LNG market and support Vietnamese gas companies in expanding into international markets.

Opening the forum, Nguyen Dang Khang, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Dai Doan Ket Newspaper, said Politburo Resolution No. 70 on ensuring national energy security through 2030, with a vision to 2045, clearly identifies clean energy, particularly liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a key pillar. Under this orientation, Vietnam seeks to build a modern and integrated energy system, develop a competitive and transparent energy market, reduce emissions, and enhance regional and international connectivity.

Participants noted that LNG is not only a solution for ensuring energy security during the transition period, but also has a key role in advancing a sustainable energy transition, in line with the Government’s commitment to net-zero emissions.

At the forum, Nguyen Minh Thao, Deputy Head of the Department for Enterprise Development and Business Environment at the Institute of Strategy and Economic–Financial Policy under the Ministry of Finance, said the legal and policy framework supporting Vietnamese gas enterprises’ international integration has become increasingly refined and more consistent with development needs.

The Government is now in a more proactive position to issue timely resolutions to address bottlenecks, reduce policy lag and create a more favorable legal environment for businesses, particularly in the energy and gas sectors, she added.

Resolution 70 was described as a key foundation that encourages participation by all economic sectors, especially the private sector in energy development, ensures fair competition in project implementation, and prioritizes gas-fired power development in line with energy transition and emission reduction trends.

Key measures highlighted at the forum included removing institutional bottlenecks for energy projects, introducing special policy mechanisms to attract nationally important projects, streamlining administrative procedures to cut compliance time and costs, and developing integrated energy industrial hubs in localities with comparative advantages.

For the oil and gas sector, policy orientation focuses on developing the gas industry and LNG infrastructure, while encouraging investment in refining and petrochemicals toward deeper processing to increase value added and strengthen participation in global value chains.

Several Politburo resolutions reaffirm the leading role of state-owned energy groups, while expanding space for private sector participation and international investment.

With oil and gas reserves declining, extraction costs rising and the energy transition accelerating, further completion of the legal framework, particularly amendments to the Petroleum Law, is considered necessary to move away from a purely extractive model toward the management and development of integrated energy chains, in support of national energy security and international integration.
