Former US veteran sends 504 roses in remembrance of Son My massacre victims

VOV.VN - The Quang Ngai Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism on March 16 held an incense-offering ceremony at the Son My Memorial Site to mark the 57th anniversary of the massacre (March 16, 1968 – March 16, 2025) that claimed the lives of 504 Son My residents .

The ceremony was attended by Bui Thi Quynh Van, secretary of the provincial Party Committee and chairwoman of the Provincial People’s Council, along with provincial leaders, officials from various departments, local authorities, survivors of the massacre, former US veterans, and many local residents and students from Tinh Khe Commune, Quang Ngai City.

Fifty-seven years ago, on the morning of March 16, 1968, in Son My Village, Tinh Khe Commune, a US Army platoon launched a sudden assault, brutally massacring 504 innocent civilians, mostly elderly people, women, and children in just a few hours.

The massacre shocked the world, exposing the atrocities committed by US troops in Vietnam and fueling a wave of anti-war protests both in the US and internationally.

More than half a century has passed, yet the pain and loss remain deeply embedded in the hearts of Son My residents, millions of Vietnamese people, and peace-loving individuals worldwide.

Today, however, the people of Son My have chosen to move forward, transforming their grief into motivation to rebuild their homeland. They continue fostering friendship and promoting peace and progress for humanity.

The Son My Memorial Site has become a historical landmark and a symbol of peace and reconciliation, capturing great attention from both domestic and international visitors. Each year, tens of thousands of tourists come to learn about this tragic chapter of history.

Following the tolling of five gongs and four bell chimes, provincial leaders, delegates, and local residents solemnly offered incense and flowers in remembrance of the 504 Son My victims.

During the ceremony, attendees observed a moment of silence and respectfully placed offerings at the Son My monument to honor the innocent civilians who perished in the massacre.
