Heavy rains and flash floods have claimed at least 12 lives in central, southern and the Central Highlands provinces, including five in Binh Thuan province while wrecking havoc on local infrastructure and farmer’s crops over the past few days.

The rising water has submerged nearly 5,000 houses, about 40,000 hectares of rice and subsidiary crops, and more than 50 schools in provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue, Binh Thuan Dong Nai, Lam Dong, Dak Lak and Dak Nong.

Many irrigation works, highways and interconnecting roads running through communes and hamlets have been seriously destroyed.

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting forecast on August 17 that water levels in the rivers from Nghe An to Thua Thien Hue, Central Highlands and upper parts of the Mekong river would rise higher.  Big floods are likely to happen in the Dong Nai River area. The centre warned local people to be on alert for flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas.
