At least 17 people including children have died from recent floods in Mekong Delta, said the An Giang provincial Steering Committee for Storm and Flood Control, Search and Rescue.

Over the past few days, the water levels in the Tien and Hau rivers have quickly risen with strong currents, causing extensive losses to life and property. Landslides along the banks of the Tien and Hau rivers are threatening thousands of households.

In Dong Thap Province, 43 communes and wards have been affected by landslides with material losses estimated at VND 2.5 billion.

Authorities and relevant sectors in Dong Thap and nearby An Giang province have moved hundreds of households from dangerous areas and established many rescue and first aid centres for victims.

Floods in the Mekong Delta reached its peak on September 8 with the water levels in the Tien River measuring 3.85 m, 0.25m higher than the second alert level, and in the Hau river recording 3.33, 0.17 m lower than the third alert level.

The National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting has predicted the northeastern monsoon to extend to the northern region and then to the central area, causing rains in some areas.

The centre has asked local authorities to take effective measures to prevent flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas.
