Flash flood warning stations will be set up in five northern mountainous provinces which are prone to disasters: Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Lao Cai and Yen Bai.

The plan is under a project to build a flash flood risks map and a flash flood warning system. The project has been being carried out for two months by the Hydro-Meteorology Institute.

The project defined eight regions facing high risk of flash floods, such as the northwestern region, the northeastern region, the north central region, the mid-central region, the south central region, and the mid- Dong Nai River region, and the Central Highlands region.

After the installation of flash flood warning stations in the first five northern mountainous provinces is completed, the project will then continue in the remaining regions.
Over 320 flash floods occurred in Vietnam from 1953-2005. Most of the cases happened suddenly in mountainous, midland, remote and isolated regions, which are short of modern communication facilities to call for aid.

From 1990-2005, over 100 flash floods occurred, causing almost 1,000 deaths and people going missing. Losses were estimated at VND1.91 trillion (US$119 million).

Ha Giang, Lao Cai, Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La, and Yen Bai provinces in the north and central Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces are often hit by flash floods.
Flash floods annually cause losses between VND25-200 billion (US$12.5 million).
