First whooping cough fatality recorded in southern province

VOV.VN - A 2-month-old girl from southern Binh Phuoc province has died of whooping cough, the first fatality caused by the disease in the locality.

The girl hailing from Bu Dang district of Binh Phuoc province developed symptoms of a cough with phlegm on December 11.

The family took her to a private clinic and received home treatment. However, after five days with no improvement, she was transferred to Children’s Hospital No. 2 in Ho Chi Minh City, where she was diagnosed with pertussis (whooping cough).

Despite intensive treatment, she passed away on December 27 with a diagnosis of pertussis, pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis, and multiple organ failure.

The girl had not received immunization against child killers, including whooping cough.

Local health workers disinfected and sanitized the area surrounding the patient’s home and other potentially related areas.

Earlier, Bu Dang district documented four other whooping cases, all of which were successfully treated.

In a report released in August 2024, the Ministry of Health stated that the number of whooping cough cases had increased 25 times compared to the same period in 2023. Given the risk of a continued rise in infectious disease cases, experts believe that vaccination is the most effective preventive measure.

In addition, parents are advised to follow the vaccination schedule and monitor their children's health for early signs of illness to ensure timely treatment.
