First bicycle lane inaugurated in HCM City to promote green transport

VOV.VN - The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction on December 31 inaugurated a dedicated bicycle lane along Mai Chi Tho Avenue, marking a new step in the city’s efforts to promote green, sustainable urban transport and reduce reliance on private motor vehicles.

The project broke ground on October 10, with a total investment of more than VND14.2 billion. Construction was completed on December 26, finishing 45 days ahead of the original schedule.

The bicycle lane stretches 5.7 kilometers and is two meters wide, with a reduced width of 1.5 meters on bridge sections. It has a designed speed of 20 kilometers per hour.

The route starts at the Mai Chi Tho–Nguyen Co Thach intersection and ends at the Mai Chi Tho–D1 intersection. The surface is constructed with asphalt concrete, with a maximum gradient of 4%. Supporting facilities, including parking areas, bicycle stations, lighting and drainage systems, have been built in a synchronized manner.

Mai Chi Tho Avenue is one of the city’s key traffic arteries, passing through major residential and urban developments such as Sala, New City and The Sun Avenue, where demand for short-distance travel between residential areas and service facilities is particularly high. The route also serves as an important connector to existing and future metro lines, including the Ben Thanh–Suoi Tien line, the planned Ben Thanh–Thu Thiem line and the Thu Thiem–Long Thanh line.

The separation of bicycle lanes within green corridors allows residents to easily access metro lines, bus services and other public transport options, thereby improving the overall efficiency of the city’s urban transport infrastructure, said Vo Khanh Hung, deputy director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, at the ceremony.

Hung revealed that Ho Chi Minh City plans to expand its bicycle lane network to better connect shopping centres, office buildings, parks and sites of historical significance, while enhancing links with public transport systems and parking infrastructure. A number of major roads across the city are currently under study for future bicycle lane development, as part of the city’s long-term strategy to build a more livable, low-carbon and sustainable urban transport system.
