The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has decided to fund a training programme for southern farmers on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) using Good Agricultural Practices (GAP).
The Director of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD)’s Southern Plant Protection Centre, Ho Van Chien, says that under the US$84,000 project, FAO specialists will run two courses for 70 farmers from the central province of Ninh Thuan and the southernmost province of Ca Mau who will teach other farmers the skills later.
During the three-month course, the trainers will learn about IPM, which was first introduced in the country almost 15 years ago, for other crops as well as rice. They will be equipped with knowledge of Vietnam and ASEAN’s Good Agricultural Practices and the Global Partnership for Good Agricultural Practices.
They will also learn about the consequences of climate change on plants and intensive farming techniques to build up sustainable methods of cultivation.
