Family is the strongest shield for children online, Deputy PM says
VOV.VN - No shield is stronger than the companionship of families with children in cyberspace, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra emphasised at the launching ceremony of a programme aimed at protecting and supporting children in the digital environment for 2026-2030.
Speaking at the ceremony held in Hanoi on May 29, Tra noted that as children increasingly grow up with smartphones, social media and digital platforms, the most important safeguard is not technology itself, but the active involvement of families in children’s online interactions.
“No technology can replace parental care, and no protection is more sustainable than the close companionship of families with children,” she said.
According to the Deputy PM, cyberspace has become an essential part of children’s lives - a place for learning, entertainment, communication and exploration. However, opportunities are accompanied by growing risks such as harmful content, cyberbullying, online scams, personal data abuse and cross-border child exploitation.
“These risks exist right inside the smartphones children use every day. If adults are one step behind, children may face severe harm in the virtual world,” she warned.
She stressed that protecting children online is no longer solely the responsibility of families, schools or authorities, but a shared mission of society and the entire political system. Still, families remain the first and most important line of defense.
“Every family must truly become a loving, safe and trustworthy place where children are heard, supported and accompanied,” she said.
The Deputy Prime Minister also called on the education sector to strengthen digital literacy, self-protection skills and responsible online behaviour for students, while enhancing schools’ role in guiding safe digital conduct.
Government agencies and localities were urged to improve early warning systems, prevention measures and law enforcement against online child abuse, alongside promoting healthy digital and entertainment products for children.
At the launching ceremony, Vietnamese rapper Den Vau, ambassador of the “Khong Mot Minh” (Not Alone) online safety campaign, also highlighted the importance of adults setting positive examples in digital spaces.
“The internet is where children observe adults every day. Therefore, we must change first - becoming more civilized, safer and more positive online,” the rapper said.
The 2026-2030 programme, led by the Ministry of Public Security, aims to implement the Government’s goals on child protection in cyberspace, following the 2021-2025 phase.
