Environmental protection – an urgent issue

Co-organised by Hanoi National Economics University (NEU) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science’s (JSPS) Asian Core Program, the event attracted scholars, researchers and experts from Japan, China, the Republic of Korea, and Vietnam. Representatives from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) were also in attendance.

 

The seminar is part of a series of Asian Core Program held annually in Japan, the RoK and China.

By co-organising this iteration, the NEU hopes to encourage the valuable sharing of experience, further economic cooperation between Vietnam and northern Asian countries and improve the research capacity of NEU lecturers.

 

 
 
NEU Rector Nguyen Hong Son noted that despite undeniable socio-economic achievements, Vietnam’s industrialisation and modernisation is still facing a number of challenges.

He highlighted obstacles including poor production management, wastefulness, widespread environmental pollution, and the ineffective exploitation of natural resources.

 

Modernisation’s burden on the fragile natural world has made sustainable manufacturing and environmental management major priorities. Sustainable manufacturing is able to improve general quality of life while limiting the irresponsible pillaging of natural resources and minimising resulting waste and pollution.

 

Son said the seminar provides Vietnamese policy-makers with a valuable experience in managing the environment successfully and promoting sustainable production. It could also lead to initiatives boosting environmental protection cooperation between Vietnam and north Asia, especially Japan.
