Embassy confirms a Vietnamese victim in Seoul stampede

VOV.VN - A Vietnamese citizen, 21, has been killed in the October 29 stampede in Seoul, the Republic of Korea, to celebrate Halloween 2022, the Vietnamese Embassy in the RoK confirmed, citing sources from local police.

More than 150 people, including foreigners, have been killed in the incident, said the police.

RoK Foreign Minister Park Jin sent a letter to Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Vu Tung expressing his condolences over this incident and affirming that he would make every effort and work closely with the Embassy in supporting victims of the incident.

The embassy said after the incident the Embassy dispatched officials to work with the Korean authorities to verify the news and identity of the deceased citizen. They also requestied that the Korean side urgently investigate the cause of the death and protect the legitimate rights and interests of Vietnamese citizens.

The Embassy contacted and assisted the bereaved in identifying the victim, and guiding necessary procedures. At the same time, the Embassy also urgently verified information and visited another Vietnamese citizen injured in the incident.

On October 30, State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc sent his condolences to RoK President Yoon Suk Yeol and bereaved families of the stampede in Seoul's Yongsan district.

The incident, which broke out on October 29 night, claimed 153 lives and injured dozens as crowds were celebrating Halloween on Itaewon street.
