Some 500 delegates representing 7.3 million Vietnamese elderly people will gather in Hanoi for the third congress of the Vietnam Elderly Association (VEA) scheduled on December 27-30, announced VEA Vice Chairman and General Secretary Do Trong Ngoan.

Mr Ngoan said at a press conference on December 19 that the up-coming VEA congress would discuss the association's orientations in the next term before adopting an action plan and a resolution.

The VEA will also organise various activities on the sidelines of the congress to highlight the contributions and good examples of the elderly. According to VEA Chairman Vu Oanh, the next congress will continue to affirm the role and position of the elderly in society.

Elderly people in Vietnam now accounts for 9 percent of the country's whole population.
