Eight Vietnamese arrested in Cambodia for suspected online fraud

VOV.VN - Cambodian authorities have arrested eight Vietnamese nationals, including three women, during a raid on a site allegedly involved in online fraud in Chbar Ampov District, Phnom Penh.

The operation, carried out on October 14 by Cambodian law enforcement forces, in coordination with the Deputy Prosecutor of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, resulted in the seizure of ten desktop computers and four mobile phones reportedly used in scam activities.

According to Khmer Times, local authorities have not yet revealed detailed information about the identities of the suspects.

Preliminary investigations suggest the individuals were operating a call centre aimed at defrauding Vietnamese citizens. They allegedly posed as representatives of prize giveaway programmes and employed other deceptive tactics to obtain victims' Visa card information, which was then used to access bank accounts and steal funds.

The arrested individuals, along with the confiscated equipment, have been handed over to relevant authorities for further legal action.

Cambodia officials announced that they will enhance efforts against technology-related crimes and enforce strict legal measures against those responsible for these fraudulent operations.

Earlier in July, the Cambodian government launched a nationwide campaign to crack down on online scams. At that time, Prime Minister Hun Manet signed a directive targeting online fraud.

In addition, the Cambodian government also ordered provincial governors, the Ministry of Interior, the National Police, and other relevant ministries to coordinate efforts to eliminate internet scams across the country. Those who fail to implement the directive risk dismissal or reassignment.

At the time, authorities across Cambodia were instructed to impose the strictest measures on the masterminds behind online fraud schemes.
