As many as 9,000 birds have been culled after new bird flu outbreaks were discovered in six communes of four districts in the two southern provinces of Bac Lieu and Ca Mau last weekend.

They were the first outbreaks detected in the country after one year of Vietnam’s successful control of the epidemic. Some of the infected birds tested positive for the H5N1 virus.

The main reason for the recurrence of the disease seems to be the subjective attitude of local farmers, veterinarians and even local authorities. According to the Veterinary Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, there is a high risk of bird flu infection in the Mekong River delta.

To cope with the disease, particularly in Bac Lieu, Ca Mau and nearby provinces, it is necessary to isolate and disinfect the affected areas, conduct vaccination campaigns for the poultry stock, set up quarantine check-points and ask local people to take effective measures for prevention and control of the disease.

Border provinces were asked to intensify surveillance and strictly deal with cases of illegal bird imports.

Bird flu often occurs from December to March with a peak in late January and early February. The Prime Minister asked chairmen of all provincial People’s Committees to take responsibility if the bird flu epidemic recurs in their localities.
