Deputy PM pushes for educational reform

(VOV) - Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam has underscored the need to improve the quality of exams and education management at a February 13 conference in Hanoi.

The conference held by the Ministry of Education and Training (MoIT) aims to review the outcomes of the first semester and devise tasks for the second.

Education universalisation and changes to the secondary school graduation exam in 2014 and the years to come were also tabled for discussion.

It is imperative to deal with weaknesses and mobilise social resources to popularize pre-school education for five-year-old children, Dam said, noting the building of schools at industrial zones for workers’ children.

He asked the ministry to properly conduct graduation exams at secondary schools this year with students’ interests put at the top.

According to the MoIT, greater attention has been given to pre-school universalization for five-year-old children and effective teaching methods have been applied widely.

Quang Binh provincial Department of Education and Training Director Doan Duc Liem suggested the MoIT should set appropriate criteria for students who are exempt from the university entrance exams aiming to ensure equality between schools and localities.

Some participants said foreign languages should be a compulsory or optional subject to defer to students’ wish.
