Dak Lak steps up meningococcal disease response after fatal case
VOV.VN - Health authorities in Dak Lak, a province in central Vietnam, are stepping up measures to contain meningococcal disease following the detection of several cases, including one death.
According to the provincial Centre for Disease Control, the fatal case involved a two-year-old child who initially showed mild respiratory symptoms before rapidly deteriorating, with suspected septicemia and meningitis. Despite intensive treatment, the patient did not survive.
The child’s uncle also tested positive and is currently under isolation and treatment.
Following the cases, health teams conducted epidemiological investigations and contact tracing, identified close contacts, collected samples for testing and provided preventive antibiotics.
Disinfection measures have also been carried out in affected areas to reduce the risk of community transmission.
The Ministry of Health reports that since the beginning of 2026, Vietnam has recorded 24 meningococcal cases, including four deaths. This represents an increase of nearly 50% compared to the same period last year, with infections reported sporadically across multiple localities.
Recent fatalities in southern and central regions have raised concerns over a potential rise in transmission risk.
Meningococcal disease is an acute bacterial infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis and spreads through respiratory droplets during close contact. The illness can progress rapidly and, in severe cases, may lead to death within 24 hours of onset.
The fatality rate is estimated at around 8–15%. Survivors may suffer long-term complications such as hearing loss, paralysis or neurological damage.
In response, health authorities are urging the public to get vaccinated, particularly young children and high-risk groups. Preventive measures such as frequent handwashing, covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing, avoiding sharing personal items and maintaining well-ventilated living spaces are also recommended.
People experiencing suspected symptoms are advised to seek medical attention promptly for early diagnosis and treatment.
