Critically ill foreign crewmember rescued off southern Vietnam coast
VOV.VN - An Indian crewmember aboard a foreign cargo vessel was urgently evacuated to a hospital in Nha Trang after falling critically ill in waters off southern Vietnam on October 11, according to the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (VMRCC).
The victim was identified as Panjanathan Elanchezhiyan, born in 1993, an Indian national serving as the third engineer aboard the Marshall Islands-flagged cargo ship RAMHAN (IMO 9668960).
The captain issued an urgent request for medical assistance after the crewmember exhibited severe symptoms, including high fever, dizziness, elevated blood pressure, and loss of behavioral control, with his condition deteriorating rapidly.
Upon receiving the distress signal, the VMRCC immediately provided remote medical guidance while coordinating rescue plans. As the patient's condition worsened, requiring specialized hospital care, the agency dispatched specialized rescue vessel SAR 273, stationed in Nha Trang, at 8:48 a.m. under the direction of the Vietnam Maritime and Waterway Administration.
SAR 273 reached the RAMHAN at 9:30 a.m. Rescue personnel administered initial medical care before safely transferring the patient to the rescue ship for the trip ashore.
At 10:54 a.m., SAR 273 docked at the VMRCC pier in Nha Trang city, Khanh Hoa province. The victim was handed over to shipowner representatives and relevant local agencies before being taken to a hospital in Nha Trang for medical examination and treatment.
