COVID-19: Total tally surpasses 1000 mark after 14 new cases recorded

VOV.VN - Vietnam’s total number of coronavirus infections has crossed the 1000 mark, hitting 1,007 after 14 further cases of COVID-19 were confirmed on August 20 afternoon by the Ministry of Health.

Among the new infections, 12 are cases of local transmission, with 11 detected in Da Nang hotspot and one in the nearby central province of Quang Nam. Most of them are care takers at hospital, and those having close contact with people infected with the deadly virus.

Of the remaining two imported cases, one is a Philippine expert who arrived at Cam Ranh Airport on flight OZ773 on August 14 and was put in quarantine right after entry in Khanh Hoa.

The other case is a returnee from Equatorial Guinea to Hanoi's Noi Bai Airport on flight VN6 and was immediately quarantined upon arrival on July 29. After undergoing a 14-day isolation period upon entry on August 14, the patient returned to Ho Chi Minh City for home isolation, and then his sample was positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus on August 19. Currently he is put in quarantine to receive treatment at Cu Chi Field Hospital.

The same day, 9 COVID-19 patients were declared to have fully recovered from the disease, raising the national count of recoveries to 542.

As of 6 pm August 20, Vietnam registered a total of 1,007 positive cases, including 342 imported ones, and 666 cases of local transmission, of which 525 cases are linked to Da Nang, the nation’s most recent COVID-19 hotspot since July 25.

More than 83,660 people are kept in quarantine at different health facilities throughout the country after they returned from abroad or came into close contact with infected people.

Among those still under treatment, 44 have tested negative for the SARS-CoV-2 virus once, 39 twice, and 28 others thrice.

Regarding a  patient recorded in Hanoi in the morning of the day, a 87-year-old man, has been removed from the nation's count of coronavirus patients after testing negative for the virus thrice. He is still being under health monitoring at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi's Dong Anh District.

According to the Ministry of Health, from July 24 to August 20, Da Nang recorded 367 cases of COVID-19 in total of which, 22 people died and 94 patients were discharged after making a full recovery from the disease.

With the latest updates, there have been 439 active case in treatment, and 25 fatalities due to a combination of various pre-existing underlying health issues and COVID-19 complications.
