COVID-19: Daily count rises to over 16,000, Hanoi infections hit nearly 2,900

VOV.VN - Vietnam’s COVID-19 daily count has surpassed the 16,000 mark again, hitting 16,035 during the past 24 hours after falling to 14,818 in the previous day, the Ministry of Health said in its coronavirus update on January 11.

Of the total, as many as 10,691 locally acquired cases were detected in the community, 16 cases tested positive upon returning from overseas, and the remainder were documented in the lockdown and quarantine areas.

Hanoi capital in the north continued to top localities, registering 2,884 cases. It was followed by Khanh Hoa, Binh Dinh and Binh Phuoc that confirmed 762, 671 and 667 new cases respectively.

Ho Chi Minh City that was the epicenter of the recent coronavirus outbreak saw 558 new cases over 24 hours, an increase of 121 cases compared to the previous day. January 11 marked the first time for the past days the daily count of Vietnam’s largest metropolis has exceeded the 500 case mark.

Official data from the MoH also show that 6,866 patients were discharged from hospital, and 256 patients died of COVID-19 and underlying illnesses during the day.

As of 06pm on January 11 Vietnam has detected 1,930,428 COVID-19 cases, including 1,925,942 locally acquired cases.

Of the infected patients, 1,596,960 have been discharged from hospital after making a full recovery from the disease, and 34,787 patients have died of the virus. 

A total of nearly 162.3 million vaccine doses have been administered nationwide, with 71.3 million people getting their second shot and 12.5 million people receiving their additional shot/booster jab.
