Crimes in Vietnamese territorial waters have increased in many forms and in close association with mainland gangs inside and outside Vietnam, according to a seminar held in Hanoi on June 22.

More than 50 participants from the Ministry of Public Security, the Navy, the Maritime Police, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs delivered speeches on the criminal situation along the long coastline of Vietnam and in the country’s territorial waters as well as countermeasures to deal with them.

Such crimes as trafficking and piracy involving foreign elements have risen due to various factors behind the global economy, finance, and politics. Meanwhile, Vietnam’s coastline is among the longest in the world. Its 3,200-km coast runs from the north to the south and is open to the east, south and west.

Also at the seminar, participants discussed measures to strengthen coordination among law-enforcement bodies.

The scientific reports at the event also highlighted the need to improve the training of the forces involved in fighting maritime crime.
