The twins were born following a caesarean section in June, 2019, at Hung Vuong hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. The pair were born with separate internal organs but were joined by the pelvis. A year later, they were transferred to the Children’s Hospital in the southern city to undergo medical observation and to receive special treatment as a means of preparing them for surgery.
Approximately 100 doctors and nurses from some of the country’s leading hospitals were mobilised to take part in the operation
Due to the effects of the life-changing operation, each baby was predicted to lose up to 500ml of blood.
The surgical team successfully managed to separate the conjoined twins.
After successfully separating the two girls, they were transferred to another operating room in order to perform the remaining stages of the surgery.
The operation saw the participation of Prof. and Dr. Tran Dong A, the head surgeon of the medical team and in charge of surgery for conjoined twins at Viet-Duc hospital for the past 30 years.
The final part of the operation takes a total of 12 hours and is scheduled to conclude at 6pm on July 15.
The baby girls, named Truc Nhi and Dieu Nhi, are now 13 months old and both weigh a total of 15kg. With their physical development indicators being close to that of normal children, the pair were healthy enough to undergo the surgery, according to doctors.
