A big conference on the quality of tertiary education will be held in 2007, announced Vice Minister of Education and Training Banh Tien Long at a meeting in Hanoi on August 30 with representatives from 120 northern universities and colleges.

Vietnam’s tertiary education has obtained certain important achievements, Mr Long said. However, the training quality remains low due to certain weaknesses in combining learning with practice, unbalanced structure of subjects, and irrational systems and functions of educational establishments.

At the meeting, universities and colleges presented their proposals on seven issues, namely management, finance, teaching staff, training and scientific research, etc. They especially highlighted the decentralisation of education with self-decisions given to schools in terms of recruitment, finance, and personnel. They also proposed renovating enrolment-planning and financial mechanisms.
