Cold spell likely to bring severe cold to northern Vietnam in coming days
VOV.VN- Northern Vietnam is expected to be affected by a strong northeast monsoon from late January 20 through January 21, bringing rain and a sharp drop in temperatures, with the risk of severe cold and extreme cold conditions in the comming days, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
Mai Van Khiem, Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said the agency has prepared detailed weather forecasts to support the 14th National Party Congress, scheduled to take place from January 19 to January 25, 2026, to help ensure smooth and safe operations.
“The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting will continue to closely monitor weather developments and provide timely updates to effectively support the organization of the 14th National Party Congress,” Khiem said.
According to the forecast, northern Vietnam will see dry weather on January 18-19, with light morning fog, sunny conditions during the day, and cold temperatures at night and in the early morning.
From late January 20 into January 21, the region will come under the influence of a strong northeast monsoon, bringing rain and colder conditions. From January 21 to January 25, severe cold is likely across much of the North, while mountainous areas may experience extreme cold, which could affect daily activities and travel, Khiem said.
In central Vietnam, weather from January 18 to January 20 is expected to be mostly dry and sunny. Areas from Thanh Hoa to Hue will remain cold at night and in the early morning. Between January 21 and January 23, scattered showers are likely from Quang Tri to Quang Ngai, before conditions stabilize and rainfall decreases on January 24-25. Provinces from Thanh Hoa to Hue are expected to stay cold, with pockets of severe cold in northern parts of the region.
In the Central Highlands and southern Vietnam, weather from January 18 to January 25 is forecast to be largely dry, with sunny days and light morning fog. The Central Highlands will see cold conditions at night and in the early morning, and residents are advised to take precautions against the cold.
For Hanoi, dry weather is expected from January 18 to January 20, with light morning fog, sunny daytime conditions, and cold nights and mornings. Rain is forecast from late January 20 into January 21 as the strong northeast monsoon moves in. From January 21 to January 25, the capital may experience severe cold, with nighttime lows of around 11-13 degrees Celsius and daytime highs of 15-17 degrees, Khiem added.
