Mr Hoc said that if the sea level rises by 1m, 90 percent of land areas in the Mekong Delta region will be submerged when floods occur, 70 percent of land areas will have high levels of salt in the dry season and 53,000 hectares of land in central coastal provinces will also be flooded.

According to the Asian Development Bank’s calculation, the temperature increases by 1⁰C and rice productivity drops by 10 percent on average annually. In addition to epidemics, these factors have a negative impact on Vietnam’s food security and will affect the world as Vietnam is the world’s second biggest rice exporter.

There are also climate change effects on aquaculture, salt production and the ecosystem of forest, especially mangrove forest in coastal areas. Indigo forests, and fauna and flora will also change in both quantity and quality.
