VOV.VN - A three-year-old child in the Central Highland city of Buon Ma Thuot, Dak Lak province, has been diagnosed with the Corynebacterium diphtheria, becoming the first diphtheria infection in the localilty.
The child, living in Cu Ebua commune, first began to show diphtheria symptoms on August 29, including a high temperature, a cough, a sore throat, and diarrhea. The child was subsequently taken to a private clinic but showed no signs of recovery. The Central Highlands General Hospital confirmed on September 2 the patient had tested positive for the Corynebacterium diphtheria.
Approximately 200 households who had been living in affected areas were quarantined or tested for diphtheria. Local medical workers also disinfected the home of the child and nearby places of residence to ensure the bacterium strain does not spread among the wider community.
At present, Dak Lak province has recorded a total of 41 diphtheria cases, including seven cases in Cu Mgar district, 17 in Krong Bong, two in Cu Kuin, five in Lak district, seven in Mdrak, and the latest case in Buon Ma Thuot City.
