Hanoi will slash the number of poor households by 22,500, bringing the poverty rate down to 4.5 percent by 2010, said Nguyen The Hung, Vice Director of the municipal department for labour, invalids and social affairs.

Hung said on May 17 that these families include 352 revolutionary ones.

He added that the city will also help nearly 3,700 households repair or build new houses.

The total cost is estimated at VND48 billion, the official said.

This is just one of numerous activities to mark the millennial anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi this October.
