Cao Bang to host UNESCO conference on geoparks in Asia-Pacific region

VOV.VN - Around 1,000 domestic and foreign experts are expected to take part in the eighth International Conference of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network for the Asia-Pacific Region due to take place from September 5 to 17 in the northern mountainous province of Cao Bang.

Themed "Local Communities and Sustainable Development in Geopark Region", the conference this year aims to share and exchange experiences, effective models, and useful solutions in the development and management of geoparks according to UNESCO's standard among members of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network in the Asia-Pacific region.

It also seeks to raise awareness and responsibility among all levels of government, sectors, and the public in preserving and promoting various types of heritage to foster sustainable tourism development.

Through the event, Vietnam will have a platform to promote an image of a
civilized, safe, and beautiful country with a unique culture, said Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ha Kim Ngoc at a press briefing on August 22.

It will be able to show itself as a country home to friendly and hospitable people whilst being a reliable destination to international friends, he added.

The administration of Cao Bang will host a wide range of activities during the conference, including sessions of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council and the 20th anniversary celebration of the Global Geoparks Network.

In addition, the signing of co-operation agreements among geoparks in the global UNESCO network of the Asia-Pacific region is also scheduled to take place.

A photo exhibition showcasing the beauty of Cao Bang and the UNESCO Non Nuoc Global Geopark will get underway.

Located about 300km from Hanoi, Non Nuoc Cao Bang in the northern province of Cao Bang was recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2018. It covers nearly 3,700sq.km and is home to nine ethnic minority groups, including the Tay, Nung, Mong, Dao, and San Chay people.

Cao Bang is also renowned for many other scenic attractions, such as the Phia Oac Ecotourism Area, Phia Den, the Thang Hen Lake cluster, Nguom Ngao Cave, and in particular the Ban Gioc Waterfall, which was named among the 21 most beautiful waterfalls in the world by travel magazine Travel + Leisure of the United States.
