Can Tho bridge’s missing link was officially connected on October 12. This is a historical landmark, opening a bright prospect for Can Tho City and the Mekong Delta region.

Spanning the Hau River and located 3.2 kilometers from the Can Tho ferry terminal, the 16km-long four-lane Can Tho Bridge has two 2.75-metre-wide walkways and knocks 32 minutes off the travelling time compared to using the ferry. The key national transport project links Highway 1A from Mong Cai to Ca Mau Cape.

The construction of the VND4,800 billion project began in September 2004 with official development assistance from Japan. It is expected to be completed by late 2008 but due to technical difficulties in September 2007 the construction was interrupted for almost a year.

As scheduled the bridge will open on March 31, 2010.

The Can Tho bridge is of great significance and demonstrates the strong determination and efforts of the officials and engineers to overcome difficulties, said Nguyen Tan Quyen, secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee.
