A campaign was launched in the northern province of Nam Dinh on December 27 to raise public awareness of bird flu outbreaks in an effort to contain the disease.

The campaign, jointly organised by the Vietnam Red Cross Central Committee, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and the Ministry of Public Health, drew the participation of over 5,000 cadres and volunteers in the province.

In response to recent outbreaks in the southern provinces of Ca Mau and Bac Lieu where almost 10,000 poultry had been culled, the campaign called on all sectors and organisations in the province to make people understand and take measures to protect
themselves and the community from bird flu infection.

Local sectors are also required to prepare forces and facilities to effectively deal with possible bird flu outbreaks.

On the occasion, a writing contest on bird flu and the H5N1 virus was launched for pupils and students in the province.
