Half of the businesses in Vietnam, mainly in the southern provinces and cities, are now facing a shortage of workers, according to the Ministry of Labour - Invalids and Social Affairs (Molisa).

After Tet, the number of people applying for jobs is falling far short of the rising demand for workers, especially in industrial and export processing zones.

Many businesses cannot find new employees to complete the contracts they have signed since the beginning of the year.

In industrial provinces like Dong Nai and Binh Duong, although the number of investors seeking chances to expand their businesses, such as Timken from the US and Toyota and Shiseido from Japan, is on the rise, they are unable to hire sufficient production workers.

The growing number of exported workers and the expansion of industrial and export processing zones are considered the major reasons for the labour shortage. Another factor is that many people want to work in their home province rather than seeking a job in one of the big cities.

To solve the problem, businesses should do more to lure workers and upgrade their technology to increase productivity. They should also have a long-term business plan.
