President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee Pham The Duyet sent a letter to the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) on May 24 underlining the important role of Buddhism in the Vietnamese society on the occasion of Buddha’s 2551st birthday.

In the letter, Mr Duyet wished the VBS to conduct more activities in 2007 in order to promote concord among Buddhist believers, to encourage their strong attachment to the nation, and to intensify the solidarity, friendship and cooperation between the Buddhist organisations of Vietnam and other countries.

President Pham The Duyet also underscored the VBS’s preparation for the fourth National Buddhist Congress, saying he hopes that through the congress, the VBS will further enhance its position and prestige.

The same day, in preparation for the fourth National Buddhist Congress, the Executive Council of the Buddhist Church of northern Thai Nguyen province held its second Buddhist congress for the 2007-2012 term.

The congress elected 21 dignitaries for the Executive Council.
