Border guard forces promote communication on combating IUU fishing

VOV.VN - The Thanh Hai Border Guard Station under Khanh Hoa province’s Border Guard Command in collaboration with the Vinh Hai Commune administration organised a conference on November 25 to raise awareness on combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing for more than 80 local fishermen and vessel owners

At the conference, officers from Thanh Hai Border Guard Station disseminated legal regulations related to fisheries activities; mandatory requirements for fishing vessels when departing and returning to port; the maintenance and operation of vessel monitoring system (VMS) devices; as well as penalties for IUU violations. Fishermen were also guided to identify maritime boundaries to avoid encroaching foreign waters, and reminded of their essential role in helping Vietnam lift the European Commission’s “yellow card”.

Earlier, on November 22, officers and soldiers of the Thanh Hai Border Guard Station visited each fishing household and vessel docked at My Tan fishing port to explain specific IUU-related regulations. The border guards also worked with local authorities to inspect fishing vessel operations, placing “not eligible for operation” labels on 21 vessels to ensure strict management and prevent potential violations.

These communication and inspection efforts contribute to raising fishermen’s awareness, aiming for a sustainable and law-abiding fisheries industry.

Meanwhile, the Border Guard Command of southern An Giang province, in coordination with the Hon Dat Commune administration, held another dissemination meeting on September 19 with the participation of more than 120 vessel owners, captains and fishermen. Specialists informed participants about essential requirements for fishermen during offshore operations and the impact of the EC’s “yellow card” on Vietnam’s seafood industry.

After more than seven years under the EC’s “yellow card” warning, Vietnam’s seafood export turnover to the European market has dropped significantly, causing losses of tens of millions of euros. Many traditional buyers have reduced or halted imports of Vietnamese seafood to avoid penalties under EU IUU regulations. If fishermen continue violating foreign waters and fail to join the nationwide effort against IUU fishing, the consequences will be severe.
