The Veterinary Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) on November 3 confirmed more cases of bird flu infection in northwestern Dien Bien province.

This latest outbreak has recurred 3 months after the epidemic was put under control nationwide.

In Dien Bien province 9 households are reported to be infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus. The veterinary department in conjunction with local authorities have destroyed 2,280 heads of poultry and have implemented strategies to prevent further outbreaks.

Diep Kinh Tan, Deputy Minister of Agricultural and Rural Development, said due to changing climate and abnormal floods, there will be high risk of bird flu infection. So it’s urgent to have local people inoculated against the epidemic for the 2nd time this year.

According to statistics, 64.8 million heads of poultry have been injected with the vaccine in 34 out of 47 provinces.

Concerning foot-and-mouth disease, up to the present, 10 provinces in the country, including Quang Nam, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Yen Bai, Son La, Ha Giang, Quang Ninh, Hoa Binh, Lai Chau and Tuyen Quang, have not yet passed the 21-day deadline to ensure they are free from the disease.
