The Ministry of Public Security held a meeting to mark World Environment Day (June 5) at the Ba Be National Park on June 2.

The Ba Be National Park in the northern province of Bac Kan was chosen as it has many species of fauna and flora, many of them in danger of extinction and needed protected.

Ha Van Khoat, Director of the Provincial Department of Public Security, said that environment protection in the cause of socio-economic development is a global issue. Bac Kan province is proud to have the largest natural forest area in the Northeastern region with 3 bio-diversity zones including the Ba Be National Park, Kim Hy and Nam Xuan Lac conservation areas. For this reason, the Department is always ready to publicise information on environment protection to raise public awareness and work closely with related agencies to prevent and handle any violations of environmental law.

The director of the Ba Be National Park, Nong The Dien, said that it is home for more than 1280 species of flora, 77 of which are under threat of extinction. It also has 553 types of vertebrates and over 400 kinds of butterflies, 20 of them newly discovered in Vietnam and 63 listed in Vietnam’s Red Book. 44 varieties of butterflies were also listed in the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Red Book in 2004.

At the meeting, the Vice Chairman of the Bac Kan Provincial People’s Committee, Nguyen Van Du, confirmed that the province makes a lot of effort to protect the environment as this is crucial for the province’s sustainable development.
