People have talked much about the “bare foot” scientist Nguyen Van Hoa in Cho Lach district, southern Ben Tre province, especially about his sua com vang hat lep durian variety. His name is well known to all fruitful gardens in the Mekong Delta. He has recently registered the “Chin Hoa” trademark at the Intellectual Property Department. It was nice to visit him at his VND1-billion two-storey villa, which is one of the most beautiful buildings in the district. Taking me to the living room, he told me passionately about his favourite durian variety that makes him rich and famous. I was really surprised to see on the wall more than 30 certificates and awards in recognition of his efforts to grow the special durian variety.
Mr Hoa said that when he was young he loved gardening very much. One day, his father told him that the special durian tree in the family’s garden was going to die. He discovered that there was a bud at the foot of the tree and decided to transplant some seedlings to cultivate a new durian variety. In 1996, Hoa took his durian to the Southern Fruit Research Institute’s good fruit competition in the Mekong Delta and won first prize. His durian variety is in no way inferior to

The second “bare foot” scientist in Cho Lach district is Le Van Hoa. His name is closely associated with Hai Hoa green-skin pomelo. His pomelo variety can produce fruits all the year around. Recently, the Southern Fruit Research Institute, in collaboration with the farming department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, organised a good pomelo variety competition in Tien Giang province. The analyses showed that pomelo varieties, namely Nam Roi, Long Co Co and Hai Hoa green-skin pomelo, have been selected as national fruits. In future, the three high-yield pomelo varieties with wonderful tastes will be replicated develop an area specializing in pomelo cultivation in the Mekong Delta, to meet the demands for local consumption and export.
The third “bare foot” scientist is Duong Van Loi (Sau Loi) in Son Dinh commune, who finds solutions for growing crunchy durians in the rainy season. He said that when the rainy season comes, the proportion of crunchy durians is high. After several years of research, he found that the durians become crunchy due to excess water and imitated a new way of growing durians. With this initiative, he received a certificate from the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Over the past few years, there have been many farmers’ initiatives of farming techniques, which are very practical. While research work from doctors and masters in science are only on paper, farmers’ creativity and initiatives have helped themselves generate more incomes for both their families and society. Every year, Cho Lach district organise a fruit competition to offer opportunities for farmers to introduce their wonderful fruits. This is also an opportunity to honor those farmers who have greatly contributed to improving the quality of fruits. Through these competitions, farmers will share experiences with each other. In future, the fruit competition will become a fruit festival to honour outstanding farmers as well as to promote the province’s image to visitors.
