After Tra Vinh, Kien Giang is the second province in the Mekong Delta declared as free from avian flu. By January 29, 20 communes of 14 districts in 6 Mekong Delta provinces, namely Ca Mau, Bac Lieu, Hau Giang, Vinh Long, Soc Trang and Can Tho were still affected by bird flu.

According to the Veterinary Department, avian flu is gradually being contained in Mekong Delta provinces. No new bird flu outbreaks were reported in Soc Trang for the last 20 days, in Vinh Long for the past 12 days and in Can Tho and Hau Giang for the past 11 days. There have been no new outbreaks for the past 21 days in Bac Lieu which saw the highest number of outbreaks in the Mekong Delta.

However, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is continuing to dispatch working groups to the affected areas to help them prevent the recurrence of bird fu from now till the Lunar New Year Festival.
