The Australian government has provided an additional AUD950,000 to the Mekong Delta province of An Giang to help implement its flood control project in the Bac Vam Nao region through November 2010.
The project aims to help expand the dyke system with spillway dams, which are designed to let flood waters out and irrigate crops to protect 100 percent of the area of Bac Vam Nao region, (24,000 hectares) by 2010.
The project, which began in 2002 and was put into operation in September 2007, received AUD37.9 million from the Australian government. It has since improved the living conditions of 240,000 people living in the region.
The project has also earmarked AUD1 million to help reduce poverty and develop small and medium-sized enterprises in the region.
