Australia will grant 1.5 million Australian dollars to Vietnam in the next three years to assist the country’s landmine victims, said Greg Hunt, Australia’s Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Foreign Affairs.

The donation will be given to the Disabled Programme run by the International Committee of the Red Cross, which has helped more than 15,000 Vietnamese handicapped people since 1995 through cooperation with the Vietnamese Government in the production of international-standard prostheses.

Mr Hunt said that bombs, mines and unexploded ordnance left after the war in Vietnam continue to be detrimental to the country’s development activities, especially in rural areas, where the poor are highly vulnerable to the danger as many of them earn their living from collecting metal waste.
