The Steering Committee for the implementation of the Coordinated Mekong Ministerial Initiative Against Human Trafficking (COMMIT) made its debut in Hanoi on September 29.

The COMMIT Vietnam Steering Committee involving the participation of nine ministries and sectors, is headed by Lieut. Gen. Tran Van Thao, who is also Head of the Public Security Ministry's Police General Department.

The committee will focus on identifying victims and arresting criminals, building a legal framework and national action plans, and promoting bilateral and multi-sectoral cooperation in the fight against human trafficking.

It will also help victims to repatriate safely and provide financial assistance to help them reintegrate into the community.

International governments and organisations have agreed to provide US$1.8 million to six countries in the Mekong sub-region to carry out the anti human trafficking project from now until the end of 2007.
