VOV.VN - A 67-year-old man in the northern province of Nam Dinh has become the country’s 50th patient who died from COVID-19 and other underlying health issues, according to the Treatment Subcommittee of the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control.

The patient had a history of stage four lung cancer and had been suffering from brain metastases for the past three years. He had been receiving chemotherapy and radiation therapy for several sessions at K Hospital's Tan Trieu facility.

During the course of treatment at the hospital, the patient suffered from respiratory failure, sepsis, fungal infection, had gone into septic shock, and was hit by multiple organ failure.

He was subsequently provided with intensive care treatment with mechanical ventilation through an endotracheal tube, continuous dialysis, and a combination of antibiotics.

Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, the patient's condition continued to deteriorate, which progressed to multi-organ failure, low-blood pressure, worsening lung functions, thereby failing respond to treatment.

The patient eventually passed away on June 3, with a diagnosis of septic shock, multiple organ failure, sepsis, brain metastasis, lung cancer, and COVID-19 infection.

The latest death marks the 15th COVID-19 fatality during the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak and the 50th since the pandemic hit the nation early last year.
