The three victims – Nguyen Quoc Tuan, 24, her brother Nguyen Quoc Hieu, 21, and Nguyen Thi Hong Mai, 25, – all died because of injuring sustained when the ambulance crossed the centre line of the Ho Chi Minh Highway and struck them head on.
Police have put out an all-points bulletin for the ambulance driver, whose identity has not yet been made public, after he fled.
If a person leaves the scene of an accident involving bodily injury, he or she face a variety of serious criminal charges regardless of whether or not they caused the accident.
Police officials said their preliminary investigation revealed the ambulance, which was not carrying any patients, was not on a legitimate emergency but on a routine call to pick up patients and transport them from a hospital in southern Dak Lak Province to Ho Chi Minh City.
