Ambulance crashes into tractor-trailer on expressway, 3 killed
VOV.VN - A serious traffic accident between an ambulance and a tractor-trailer occurred in the early hours of December 18 on the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway, killing three people.
The ambulance, carrying 5 people including a patient on board, crashed into a tractor-trailer which was parked at the rest stop area on the expressway traversing Dong Nai province at around 0:14 a.m., said local police.
Following the collision, the ambulance caught fire. Three victims were trapped inside and died at the scene. Among the deaths were the 62-year-old patient and the ambulance driver. Two injured others were taken to a nearby hospital.
Upon receiving the report, local police officers arrived at the scene to secure the area and coordinate with investigative authorities to handle the case in accordance with regulations.
Traffic police conducted rapid alcohol and drug tests on the tractor-trailer driver, with no violations detected.
The ambulance was traveling from Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City to former Binh Dinh province (now part of Gia Lai province) and was confirmed to have all required documentation for emergency medical transport.
Preliminary findings indicate that the ambulance driver failed to maintain proper attention and showed signs of drowsiness. He was driving at high speed without slowing down upon entering a rest stop area, leading to the collision.
An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
As a key way connecting HCM City to the southeastern region, Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay expressway currently has the highest traffic volume in the south, averaging 60,000-70,000 vehicles per day, frequently experiencing congestion on weekends and holidays.
The expressway is undergoing expansion, with basic completion expected by the end of 2026, which is anticipated to ease congestion and improve connectivity to Long Thanh International Airport.
