Amazon eyes low-earth orbit satellite telecom services in Vietnam

VOV.VN - Amazon has submitted a pilot application for its Kuiper Project to provide low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite telecommunications services in Vietnam.

The project is expected to provide controlled LEO satellite telecom services for up to 600,000 subscribers, focusing on consumer and enterprise connectivity, telecom backhaul, aviation, maritime, and government services.

The information was shared a recent meeting in Hanoi between Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Pham Duc Long and an Amazon delegation led by Gonzalo de Dios, head of Global Licensing and Project Kuiper at Amazon.

According to the Amazon representative, Vietnam holds a special position in the firm’s development strategy. Project Kuiper is a strategic initiative to deploy over 3,200 LEO satellites, offering high-speed Internet with low latency, targeting underserved and unserved areas such as remote regions and islands.

So far, Amazon has launched 102 satellites and aims to complete at least 50% of its constellation by 2026. The system operates on the Ka-band, with compact, easy-to-install user terminals that integrate AWS security features.

Amazon has already established Amazon Kuiper Vietnam Co., Ltd. in Ho Chi Minh City and hassubmitted an application to participate in the controlled pilot programme for providing LEO satellite telecomsservices in Vietnam.

At the meeting, Deputy Minister Pham Duc Long emphasised that Vietnam consistently prioritises the development of digital infrastructure, with LEO satellite technology playing a crucial role in ensuring widespread access to high-speed broadband connectivity for socio-economic development.

He also noted that the Kuiper Project fits Vietnam’s current needs, helping citizens access digital services and online administrative procedures, especially as the country has just completed the merger of provincial-level administrative units.

The Deputy Minister also assigned the Authority of Telecommunications and the Authority of Radio Frequency Management to promptly hold technicalmeetings with representatives of Project Kuiper to resolve technical issues and finalize the application, with the aim of submitting it to the Prime Minister for pilot approval in September 2025.

Earlier, on March 23, the Vietnamese Government granted permission to Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX), a US-based company own by billionaire Elon Musk, to launch a pilot programme for its Starlinksatellite Internet service in the country.
