Alstom secures US$897 million order for Hanoi metro trains

VOV.VN - French rail technology group Alstom has secured a first-tranche order worth approximately EUR800 million (US$897 million) to supply Metropolis trains for Hanoi’s urban railway projects under its agreement with Vingroup.

Alstom announced the order on October 19, following a cooperation contract signed with Vingroup on October 6.

The trains will be designed and manufactured at Alstom’s Valenciennes Petite-Forêt site in France, the company’s centre of expertise for metro trains. The order is due to be booked in the third quarter of Alstom’s 2026–2027 financial year.

However, Alstom has not disclosed how many trainsets are covered by this first tranche or the total value of its agreement with Vingroup.

Under the agreement announced earlier this month, Alstom and Vingroup will work together to supply 200 next-generation Metropolis trainsets for Hanoi’s urban railway projects, alongside technology transfer to support domestic manufacturing and assembly.

Alstom will design and manufacture up to 83 trainsets at its facility in France. It will also provide technology, engineering expertise, tooling support and key components to enable Vingroup to manufacture and assemble the remaining 117 trainsets in Vietnam.

The new-generation Metropolis trains will consist of five-car sets with aluminium bodies designed to reduce axle loads, improve energy efficiency and limit track wear.

They will operate fully automatically without drivers, meeting Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4), the highest level of automation for metro operations. Their braking systems combine regenerative and disc brakes, allowing energy to be recovered during braking.

According to Vingroup, the partnership is intended not only to supply rolling stock for Hanoi’s urban railway projects but also to build domestic manufacturing and assembly capabilities, helping Vietnam develop its railway industry.

Alstom has operated in Vietnam for more than 30 years. It previously supplied and integrated metro systems for Hanoi's urban railway Line 3, including 10 four-car Metropolis trainsets manufactured in France, along with signalling, power supply and depot equipment.

Under Hanoi's Capital Master Plan with a vision to 2045, the city's urban railway network is planned to reach 979 kilometres across 18 lines, serving as the backbone of its public transport system.
