The Central Eye Hospital has reported that up to 23,000 children in the country are blind in both eyes and half of these cases could have been prevented.

The hospital added that there is an increasing number of children suffering from refractive errors, including an estimated three million children under 16.

In addition, a great many children have eye defects at birth such as squints and cataracts.

Each year, between 8,000-10,000 patients need surgery to cure these defects but the health services can meet only one third of the demand.
