All 4 Vietnamese students win medals at Al-Fergani Int’l Physics Olympiad

VOV.VN - All four Vietnamese students competing at the 2026 Al-Fergani International Physics Olympiad have won medals, including one gold, two silver and one bronze, placing Vietnam fourth overall, according to the Ministry of Education and Training.

Le Ba Tuan Viet, from the High School for Gifted Students under the University of Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, won the gold medal.

The two silver medals went to Truong Ba Chi Thanh, from the same school, and Tang Hao Nhien, from Quoc Hoc Hue High School for Gifted Students in Hue City.

Le Hong Nhan, from Lam Son High School for Gifted Students in Thanh Hoa Province, secured the bronze medal.

Members of the Vietnamese team were selected from Grade 11 students in the 2025–2026 academic year who had taken part in the national selection examination for the 2026 International Physics Olympiad. Candidates were chosen based on their examination results and rankings. Hanoi National University of Teachers’ Training was assigned by the Ministry of Education and Training to lead the team’s training and organise its participation in the competition.

Named after scientist Ahmad al-Fergani, the international competition aims to encourage students’ interest in physics, develop their scientific research capabilities and promote academic exchange between countries.

This year’s examination placed greater emphasis on applying physics knowledge to analyse and solve problems related to real-world situations and modern science. It comprised theoretical and experimental components, each lasting five hours and held on a separate day. The theoretical section consisted of three problems, worth a maximum of 60 points, while the experimental section accounted for the remaining 40 points.

The challenging tasks required contestants not only to master fundamental laws and principles but also to demonstrate logical reasoning, analytical skills and the ability to apply knowledge across different fields.

The theoretical section covered a range of topics, including deformable solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, energy engineering, optics and gravitational physics. Contestants had to formulate assumptions, develop mathematical models, apply boundary conditions, assess the limits of those models and explain the physical significance of their results.

In the experimental section, students were required to design measurements, select appropriate physical quantities, process data using tables and graphs, test theoretical predictions and evaluate measurement errors. The tasks assessed their subject knowledge, practical skills, scientific reasoning and data analysis abilities.

The second Al-Fergani International Physics Olympiad (FIPhO 2026), held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from October 10 to 17. The competition brought together 107 contestants from 15 countries and territories worldwide.
