Reigning AFC Women’s Player of the Year and Goodwill Ambassador for the Asian Football against Hunger Campaign, Kathryn Gill, has called for mobilisation of people’s willpower and resources to end poverty and hunger in Asia.

Speaking at a press conference for the campaign in conjunction with the AFC U19 Women’s Championship in Ho Chi Minh City, Gill said that female players would not only compete, but also give a helping hand to poor women in Asia.

The Asian Football against Hunger Campaign was launched on October 14 and ended on October 16 when the final match between Vietnam and Japan took place at Thong Nhat Stadium.

Gill visited a fishery village in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue on October 14 where local residents are being assisted by the campaign organised by the AFC and UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

The visit was part of the efforts between the AFC and FAO to fight against hunger which affects one billion people in the world, including 578 million in Asia.

The AFC has supported over 30 projects in 10 countries throughout Asia and allocated US$413,000 from the 2011 Asian Cup ticket sales revenue to support the campaign against hunger.
