The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has pledged US$53.2 million in preferential loans to provide clean drinking water for over 150,000 people living in Vietnam’s central region.

An agreement was signed in Hanoi on May 24 between ADB Country Director Ayumi Konishi and Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam Le Duc Thuy.

The funds will be poured into projects to upgrade water supply systems and sanitation infrastructure in Binh Thuan, Dak Nong, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan and Phu Yen provinces.

Addressing the signing ceremony, Mr Konishi stressed that the investment aims to help Vietnam develop in a balanced manner and narrow that the gap between urban and rural areas.

These projects are scheduled for completion by December 2011.
