The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is aiming to reduce the rate of HIV/AIDS infection among Vietnamese youth through a US$20-million project.

The HIV/AIDS prevention project responds to the Vietnamese Government’s plan to prevent the spread of the disease and bring about youth behaviour change nationwide.

ADB health expert Lisa Studdert, who is also head of the project, said that the aim is assist the Vietnamese Government’s efforts to raise awareness among Vietnamese youth of the danger of HIV/AIDS infection and the need to use condoms and to fight dangerous practices.

The project also aims to support non-government organisations (NGOs) in 15 provinces in undertaking a related programme of province-based, youth-focused activities, including community-based advocacy, peer education, life skills training, and improved access to harm reduction services.

The project will be undertaken nationwide in five years until mid-2011.
